How to Determine the Degree of Damage to Agricultural Tires
05.22.2026

The degree of damage to agricultural tires can be determined by classifying the types of damage. Different types of damage correspond to different severity levels and treatment plans, as follows:

1. Tire surface wear type damage (graded by wear amplitude)

Mild wear: tread depth>3mm, no prominent wear lines, no impact on grip and safety, can be used normally, only requiring regular inspection.

Moderate wear: The tread depth is between 2-3mm, and the wear lines are faintly visible. The grip has decreased slightly, and attention should be paid during rainy weather operations. It is recommended to shorten the next inspection cycle and prepare for replacement parts in advance.

Severe wear: If the tread depth is less than 1.6mm, or if the tread wear is level with the wear line, it is considered severe damage that has reached the wear limit and the tire must be replaced.

Special wear type: Crown wear (severe wear in the middle of the crown) is a recordable damage caused by high air pressure. If the wear limit has not been reached, the air pressure can be adjusted to continue use. If the wear limit has been reached, it will be treated as severe damage; Unbalanced wear and wavy abnormal wear are often caused by inaccurate vehicle parameters, and can be replaced directly after reaching the limit of wear.

2. Tire sidewall injury (graded by injury type)

Mild damage: Only superficial scratches and sporadic small cracks, without damaging the curtain layer, can continue to be used. Regularly observe whether the cracks/scratches have expanded.

Moderate damage: sidewall rupture/puncture without air leakage, or small cracks with a depth of less than 1mm, can be repaired and continue to be used for low-speed operations, but long-term high load use is not recommended.

Severe injury: It belongs to the category of severe injuries that must be replaced, and can be determined by meeting any of the following criteria:

Tire sidewall bulges (internal curtain layer has already broken), or side bursts, lack of air, and crushing;

The crack depth exceeds 1mm, or the length exceeds 6mm, and has extended to the curtain layer;

Tearing of the tire bead and delamination of the tire body can significantly increase the risk of tire blowouts.

3. Piercing/stabbing injuries (graded according to the severity of the injury)

Mild puncture: The wound is caused by a small sharp object, with a diameter of less than 6mm, and is located on the tire surface. It can be repaired and used normally.

Severe stab injury: If the diameter of the wound exceeds 6mm, or if the injury is located on the sidewall of the tire, or if there is a large area of honeycomb like injury, it is considered a severe injury. It is recommended to replace the tire. After repair, it cannot guarantee the safety of high load operations.
